50% chance of rain? 100% chance we re playing! Don t be scared off by a few clouds, we ll be wrapping up week 8 tonight come hell or high water.

Yesterday the Ligers went up to Adams Morgan ready to play. We waited around a bit for The Peter Northstars to show up, but nobody came – not one. Yes, more than enough Ligers and two refs ended up scrimmaging each other. What happened, Northstars?
Ok, I know it looks gross out, but we re going to run the games. If you have the equipment, please make sure it shows up, whether your team decides to brave mother nature s uncertainty or not. Don t be scared away by a brief shower or too. Obviously if the situation has made a turn for the worse, and games are not playable come 6:30pm, we will all adjourn to Tom Tom to drown our sorrows.
Check out this recent article in the Washington Examiner.
This is probably an appropriate time to thank each and every person who is playing in DCKickball’s inaugural season. If it wasn’t for you guys pulling together teams, volunteering to ref, helping to handle equipment, participating in charity auctions, etc ,etc, the league wouldn’t be what it is. The press and buzz is all about what we’ve built from the ground-up, and I’m just really happy to play with such cool people.
Cool little post about keeping kickball in perspective.
I originally sent this out to my team, but it has been suggested that I share with the rest of the league:
For those of you who weren t able to attend last night s game, allow me to give my own personal recap:
5:30 Pregaming at Terri s
6:30 Game
7:15 HOT SUNDAE WINS!!! The 5-game losing streak is officially over after losing the first five games, there was a bit of an identity crisis when we acutally won, so it was kind of anti climatic. I give credit to team mom, Sam Butcher and the delicious orange slices!
7:16 Drinking commences at Tom Tom we are the first team to arrive
8:00 Flip cup begins Riding the wave of glory from our first kickball victory, Hot Sundae proceeds to go on an incredible winning streak, and drink entirely way too much (if such a thing is possible). I can t remember any highlights, so that s all I can share about flip cup.
Some time much, much later After arguing with none other than PoDCK (Carter) about which jumbo slice eatery to go to, myself, Carter, Terri, Rob (Editor s note: Rob was not, in fact in attendance) and probably some other people enjoy some greasy goodness. Getting caught up in the jubilation that is jumbo slice, I attempt to give Terri a hug (Editor s note: I m told we were wrestling?) and proceed to eat it on the 18th street sidewalk. Unfortunately, I also proceeded to cut my head open like none other. Dirty napkins are quickly placed over my wound, as well as someone s Hot Sundae jersey (Sorry to whoever has a bloody shirt!) I thought my friends were kind and responsible enough to call 911, but no, the ambulance that picked me up just happened to be rolling through los A Mo. I am then taken to (what I find out much, much later) is the Georgetown University Hospital for a cat scan, x-rays and some sloppy
stitches across my forehead (I don t know how many I have, and the
nurse this AM didn t know either).
Highlights from my one-night stay at the G.U.H. ER include (but are not limited to):
So, I got a quick ride home (thanks Rob and Terri), showered and am now at work. My head is throbbing like nobody s business, I may or may not be drunk, and I m realizing that I still have some dried blood in my hair (gross).
I will most CERTAINLY be taking a half day today.
BUT, I am officially (or will be once the stitches come out) scarred for life, and it will always remind me of Hot Sundae s first victory.
Go Bayside!
I ve made a small change to how photos should be tagged in order to be displayed on the DCKickball website. Right now, the photos you see on the main page are all the photos tagged (using Flickr) with dckickball . When you look at a team s blog (such as harDCore) all the images that show up on that page are tagged dckickball-hardcore . So, no matter what, dckickball is the prefix for all tags. Hopefully this will keep pictures of random punk rock bands off of the website.
Also, I ve gone ahead and updated all of the tags for the DCKickball Flickr account. If you have your own Flickr account, you ll need to update any photos you ve uploaded of your team with the new tag. It s super easy. Just go to my tags and click edit tags . Viola.
One more thing. You can attach multiple tags to an image. So, if you want a picture to show up on both the main page and your team s page, just tag it with dckickball and dckickball-{insert team tag} .
This is concievably one of the funniest things I have ever read. Yes, I am this evil.
DCKickball is the new hotness, literally. Click on the links above to check out the bachelors and bachelorettes who have signed up so far (19). And I’m sure more are coming!
Also, check out the list of sponsors we have amassed! Big ups to all of the business who have donated to a very worthy cause! And, don’t forget, our appetite for date goodies is insatiable. Help us out, talk to your local businesses about supporting the auction!
Please check out the How-To for more insight into how the website and email lists work. It will help clarify questions like: why can t I unsubscribe from my team s email list?
Wow, kickball has arrived if someone is going to create a blog to follow it, right?
Ok, this weather is bullshit. I’m not going to be bullied out of anymore games. Games are ON. In the event that the sky opens up, we hightail it to Tom Tom. But plan on coming, plan on reffing, and please bring the bags!
Mindy Moretti, the ANC-1C commissioner for the portion of Adams Morgan where we play our games, is going to be guest bartending at Chloe next week:
That’s right folks, I’m back behind the bar for charity next Thursday night the 9th (it’s like letting a kid loose in a candy shop for goodness sake!). Please join me and a host of other guest bartenders, including mayoral candidate Adrian Fenty, as we sling drinks for Hoops Sagrado. All tips will go to charity so drink early, drink often and tip big (and bring your friends).
Chloe has several bars and if the weather is nice, I’ll be working the bar near the patio.
Where: Chloe, 2437 18th St. NW
When: Thursday, June 9, 6 to 9 p.m.
Why: Because Mindy kicks ass!
Yes, I know it seems like an eternity since the Pre-Season Party. Your patience has not been in vain. I hereby announce:
The DCKickball Mid-Season Party and Fundraiser!
Friday, June 17th
McFadden s Restaurant and Saloon
2401 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC
From 9pm to midnight there will be an OPEN BAR, which includes all domestic beers, rail, AND call liquor drinks (think Absolute, Jim Beam, etc. etc.). In addition, McFadden s bartenders will be offering up Bacardi Flavor Shots for only $2! (DC law prohibits shots from being included in any open bar special boooooo DC!!!!)
Cost to league members: $10
Cost to guests: $20 (no guest list, bring as many as you d like!)
More importantly, we will be hosting our Charity Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction (muy caliente!) to benefit the Latin American Youth Center!
Here is how it s going to work:
On the night of the event there will be a brief program introducing all the Bachelors/Bachelorettes to the masses of potential bidders and then the SILENT AUCTION will take place.
Repeat: SILENT AUCTION. No one needs worry about standing on the bar and being sold off to the highest bidder. Tables will be set up where bidders can write down their bids and at the end of the night we will announce the lucky winners!
Each team will be asked for 2 volunteers (a guy and a girl) for the auction. The volunteers profiles/pictures will be posted on the DCKickball website and at McFadden s the night of the event.
DCKickball is soliciting date donations so that each bachelor/bachelorette will have a gift certificate to subsidize their outing. We are looking for restaurant and area attraction gift certificates. We really need your help with this. If you or someone you know is willing to donate a gift certificate, please email Sarah Dougherty at charity@dckickball.org.
This is going to be a great time for DCKickballers AND we re going to raise a lot of money for our charity! Captains please coordinate with your team and email the names of your volunteers to me (president@dckickball.org) no later than Thursday, June 9th.
