NEW TOOL: Field Layout & Game Day Lineup Worksheet posted by adamsmorgan on April 30th

Just when you thought DCKickball couldn’t get any better, it did. We’ve created an easy-to-use Field Layout and Game Day Lineup worksheet. Now you can easily plan the entire game. Each position has five spots for the five innings; there’s a scorecard to help you captains keep score; and you can list every present player to help you plan the kicking order.

Lawsuit Settled posted by crabasa on April 23rd

It’s been over two years since DCKickball was sued by WAKA. I won’t re-hash the details as they have been well documented. I am very happy to announce that the lawsuit has been settled. I hope you all understand that I can’t discuss the details of the settlement, except to say that the lawsuits between WAKA, DCK Sports, DCKickball and myself have been settled to the satisfaction of all parties.

The purpose of this post is really to thank everyone who supported DCKickball during this process. Without your support I can state emphatically that DCKickball would have been shut down and we wouldn’t be playing games right now.

By all account, this is going to be one of our best seasons ever. There are over 85 teams playing kickball this summer. I am very grateful to have our league’s legal situation resolved so that we can go back to focusing on the things that really matter: kicking balls and flipping cups!

Adams Morgan Referee Clinic Make-up Clinic Scheduled posted by adamsmorgan on April 18th

For all of you who were too captivated by the roving Popemobile and couldn’t make it to the reffing clinic on Wednesday, I have good news! We’ve scheduled two make-up clinics next week beginning 30 minutes before the start of the first games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

THE DETAILS
Time: 6:30pm
Where: Shaw Field
Days: Tuesday 4/22 and Wednesday 4/23

RULES BOCHURE
PDF: http://dckickball.org/assets/2008/4/18/DCK_Rules_design.pdf (8.5×14; Legal)

DIRECTIONS + MAPS

#98 AdMo-U St Shuttle: http://dckickball.org/assets/2008/4/18/98.pdf
Bus Stop: Get off at 11th and U Streets; walk down 11th towards T Street. Shaw field on Left before Rhode Island Avenue.
Field/Area Map: Click Here (The map has been updated with more info and field specifics.)

If you are unable to attend either of these clinics, please email me any questions you have about the game and rules. I will recap here just a few things that were discussed this week:

  • Physical aggression will not be tolerated and may result in eviction from game, suspension for the season or banishment from the league.
  • A foul is a foul is a foul. If a foul ball is not caught by a player but makes contact with the attempting catcher, the ball is dead.
  • Since we are not at Walter Pierce, there is no automatic-double rule. If the ball goes far, run your way home.
  • Teams are required to field a minimum of 8 players, with a minimum of 4 girls. If you do not have enough players to meet these minimums, you are allowed to substitute a player from another team for any regular-season game. Substitutions are not allowed for post-season, all-star and championship play.
  • All players MUST be wearing their DCK T-Shirts in order to be eligible to play in any game.
  • Teams must take the field no later than 15 minutes after the scheduled start of the game. Teams not meeting the eligibility requirements will be marked as a forfeit.
  • There are no bathrooms at the field, so take care of business before you arrive.

Again, I will answer any questions you have and I look forward to seeing you all out on the field!

Cheers,
Justin

Meet the Constitution Board posted by constitution on April 18th

Jack Fan (short timers) - President

Jack Fan

I'm the guy that makes sure that the beer is paid for at the end of the day. If somebody wants to come into a DCK party and claim to know the person running this division, at least get my name right (especially when talking to me).

Why you should fear me out on the fields

I think that I have a wicked change-up.

What I do when I'm not kicking

Attorney

Position

Semi-professional Third-Base Coach

Thomas Boudreau (We Wear Pink But We Still Judge You) - Vice-President of Communications

Tom B

I'm your average guy who loves less than serious competition, as well as less than serious prose. Hence a natural for communications chair of a Kickball league. So I'll be sending out the occasional email about standings, upcoming games etc probably with a few bad jokes that amused me when I was writing it up.

Why you should know me

You should know me because I enjoy using extravagant gambles/strategies in games (kickball included) that often just barely help, and more often blow up and make thing much worse. Either way its entertaining.

Why you should fear me out on the fields

Years of select soccer training & years of post college drinking. Also I do not have premature old man shakes to ruin my flip cupping ability.

What I do when I'm not kicking

Senior Consultant for Capgemini LLC (French Consulting Co. similar to Accenture)

Position

The position under the ball you just kicked, unless you bunted, as being in the dirt is no good.

Matt Toigo (short timers) - Vice-President of Community Service

Matt Toigo

This is my 3rd season playing in DC Kickball and my first season on the board. This year I'm heading up the community service end of the league. Volunteering is important to DC Kickball so that the league not be perceived as a bunch of drunks who don't do anything besides play flipcup. Life is pretty good here in DC for the majority of us, so my goal is just to have DCK give a little bit back to the city that give us fields to play on every Sunday.

Why you should know me

Throughout college I often rode a unicycle to parties, got drunk, and rode it back. With enough convincing I might even ride it to a few of the games on Sundays. I also learned to juggle so that I'll have backup career in the circus for when this whole computers and internets fad is over with.

Why you should fear me out on the fields

If you need a reason to fear me on the kickball field and flipcup table, this should strike fear into your heart.

What I do when I'm not kicking

Software Engineer at Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS)

Position

Play relief pitcher sometimes more often than not, but also usually end up playing hung over beyond repair from Saturday night.

Julie Junod (short timers) - Head Referee Coordinator

Julie

After watching the movie Dodgeball and being verklempt by Vince Vaughn’s inspiring performance, I realized that I too have something to offer in the world of sports! Upon realizing this destiny, I joined the DCKickball league to execute this undiscovered athleticism…Well, it’s yet to be discovered!! But I love playing kickball, as well as flip cup. And what is better than combining the two and drinking at 4 on a Sunday afternoon?! As Head Referee Coordinator, I help organize the referee system and inform the division about the rules of the game.

Why you should fear me out on the fields

Teams should fear me because my team spirit and constant chanting from the field and on the sidelines is sure to distract your teammates, thus preventing your team from playing to its full potential.

What I do when I'm not kicking

I am currently working as the Office/Communication Manager for the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF), a non-profit based in D.C. Our mission is to bring solar power and modern communications to people in the developing world. We have worked in over 15 countries and use solar technology to electrify homes, health clinics, schools and more.

Position

Outfield, 2B

Amanda Troy (Victorious Secret) - Vice President/Social Coordinator

Amanda

Hi! I'm Vice President/Social Coordinator and my main function is to keep Jack somewhat sane (easier said than done...), but also to make sure that everyone has a great time this season.

Why you should fear me out on the fields

That's a secret...the "victorious" kind.

What I do when I'm not kicking

Business Analyst for BearingPoint (consulting firm)

Position

Volunteer at Space Day with DCKickball posted by constitution on April 10th

Space DayDCKickball will be volunteering at Space Day at the National Air and Space Museum on Saturday May 3rd and we're looking for volunteers.

For all the great Sundays we have on the national mall, lets give a little back to one of DC's coolest free museums. Space Day is an event created for children and students to encourage them to consider careers in space exploration as well as math, science, engineering and technology.

This is an all day event that consists of lectures, hand on workshops, and demonstrations. Volunteers will help with distributing schedules, helping kids and families find events, helping seat guests at lectures, and just making sure everything runs smoothly.

If you're sold on what will likely be one of the coolest volunteer events this spring, you can find out all of the info below. If you are planning on coming, send an email to Matt Toigo (me[AT]matt-toigo.com) so we can get a count of how many people we'll have. You have to send us an email to be able to volunteer.

Space Day - May 3rd, 2008 9:30AM - 3:00PM
National Air and Space Museum
Directions: It's on the mall and you shouldn't need em, but here they are anyway.
http://www.nasm.si.edu/visit/directions/directions_mall.cfm

Volunteers may be working with children. Please wear clothes that are comfortable and washable. Museum dress code includes no flip flops, tank tops, or ripped jeans.

Volunteers will meet inside the Museum, by the staff entrance located on 6th and Independence. Lunch will also be provided.

Event Information from One Brick

One Brick can be found at http://www.onebrick.org and is a great resource for finding volunteer events in DC.
