Change in plans for the Mid-Season Super Sabado Party Sensacional

Hello Capital Conference kickballers!

I’m sad to announce that we’ve been forced to change our mid-season party location. This was nothing that the board did, or even had any say in, and are all upset about the outcome. That being said I know the mid-season party will still be a great time!

We are now going to Union Pub (www.unionpubdc.com). The party will still be on May 10th from 8:30 til closing. Cost will remain $10 for players and $20 for guests which gets you all the Miller Lite and rail drinks you can throw down.

Union Pub will also be offering the following food specials (not to be added to the DCK tab):

$5 wings, $5 nachos, $5 BBQ chicken quesadillas

Of course there will be flip cup. We’ll have it set up outside but may have to move indoors at some point in the evening.

Questions, concerns, etc, bring em!

Hope to see you all there.

Board FAQ

1) What is the Board?

http://dckickball.org/board

2) Ok, who gets what roles?

That’s up to you. Honestly, people don’t need to wear just a single hat, and a given role can be shared among multiple people. You all just need to sit down, talk about things, and hash it out. One thing that I do need, though, is someone to be President. I know it sounds scary, but it’s not. I just need a single point to contact to work with, and someone who can ultimately make a decision or call if the Board is split on something.

Not all responsibilities are created equal. I’d say the things that I most want to keep on the ball are:

Event planning (settling on dates well in advance, getting the deals set-up and throwing the party)

Fields/Equipment/Reffing (keeping track of popped balls, notifying rain-outs, making sure teams are providing refs)

Games (making sure the standings are updated)

2a) Wait, how do we update the standings?

First, acquaint yourself with the Admin Console. You can also get here by going to the DCK Sports Homepage and clicking “switch to admin”. Click on “games” and you’ll see all the scheduled games. You’ll notice a checkbox next to each game if a score has been entered. Scores are entered by the team captains.

Anyway, once all the scores for a week are entered, give it a day or two. A score might have been entered wrong, so give the captains a chance to contact you in the event of a mistake. Then, when you’re ready, check mark the games from that week and click “Certify Games”. This means the scores are set it stone and the standings are updated properly. Viola!

3) How do we do handle all this?

First, use the tools at your fingertips. Your DCK Sports Homepage provides information about your division, the games, the other teams, the Board and allows you to send emails to small groups of people (like your team) or large groups of people (the entire division).

Second, use your division homepage. If you’d like some information posted, let me know. If you’d like more real-time access, email me and I’ll give you an account to make updates directly.

Lastly, just email or call me (202-285-6865).

4) So, how much money do we have to spend?

Please select someone to handle the budget. Can be the President, can be anyone. Have that person email me, and I’ll provide a link to your division’s Google Spreadsheet where all division expenses are tracked.

5) When do I get my refund?

Once the season is under way.

6) How to we schedule games?

You schedule games by using the Admin Tool. However, you need to have mapped-out the match-ups prior to entering them via this tool. This can be kind of complicated, depending on how many teams are in your division and how many games you’re playing. Here are some templates that I hope will help:

8/16 Team Schedule

9/18 Team Schedule

7) What now?*

Ok, that’s it for now. The composition of the Board and the fun stuff you do during the season is really whatever you make of it, I just write checks and provide a framework and some connections. Here are some things that probably should be discussed no later than the start of games:

The Mid-Season Party (WHEN, where and how much?)

Playoffs (which Saturday works best? What time?)

The End-of-Season Party (can’t hurt to think about it)

Here is more detailed information on party planning

Rules

Any rule or situation not expressly defined here will default to MLB rules. At the end of the day, these calls will be made by the head ref. Whatever their call is, it stands, so don’t be a “rule nazi”.

<center>Download the DCK Rules Brochure (8.5×14, Legal)</center>

Rule #0: NO WHINING!

The first and foremost rule of the game is to have fun. If you are hoping to recapture your athletic glories from the past, this is not the league for you. Absolutely no whining will be tolerated during the course of a game. The only players allowed to communicate with the referees are the captain and co-captain. Any abuse (verbal or otherwise) of the referees or other players will constitute an immediate ejection from the game. Repeated offenders will be banned from the league. No exceptions.

THE PLAYING FIELD

Field of play will equal the dimensions of a standard softball field (i.e., with the bases being about 60 feet or 20 paces apart).

EQUIPMENT

DCKickball will provide equipment. This will consist of a red 10-inch playground ball, bases and cones.

OFFICIALS

Teams will be assigned games to officiate either before their own game or after. Games will be officiated by two (2) to four (4) refs who will be scheduled and provided by all teams. The home plate referee is the alpha and the omega and issues all final rulings. Each team will provide a minimum of 2 players who must attend the scheduled Pre-Season Referee Clinic.

Only a team captain or co-captain may dispute a call with the referee. The referee has jurisdiction over the play and may penalize a player, including game ejection, for un-sportsman like conduct. Ejected players may not return to the game and if necessary may be asked to leave the premises; don’t be a punk.

PARTICIPANTS

All players must be 21 years of age or older. Players may only play on a team on which they are registered. Exception: You may function as a substitute player for another team if they are short a man or woman. This is ONLY valid during the regular season.

DCKickball reserves the right to suspend any player at any time for unsportsmanlike conduct, violation of any rules, for failure to pay appropriate dues or for being a general pain in the ass, without any refund what so ever. Any team wishing to suspend any member for just reasons must do so on their own and provide DCKickball a written reason as to why. Again, no refunds. At the discretion of DCKickball, any member suspended may not in the future be allowed to participate in any further DCKickball events.

TEAMS

Each team must consist of a minimum of fifteen (15) players and no more than 26 players. A team may not play more than 11 players at a time in the field. Each team is required to have at least 4 women in the field in each inning.

Every player present is required to be in the kicking line up. Every player present is required to play at least one (1) inning in the field. If a team does not have the required minimum number of female players in the fielding lineup, then the team must forfeit.

If a team is playing with less then 10 players, they are not required to have a catcher. If a team cannot field at least 8 players, they automatically forfeit.

Each team shall have one Captain and one Co-Captain who are charged with:

Making sure that only players registered on their team are participating on their behalf in a game.

Insuring that their players kick in the same order through out the game (if necessary, teams can exchange kicking lineups prior to the game).

Disputing a call on the field and remaining cool at all times.

Making sure everyone on their team understands the rules.

Turning in the game results to the appropriate person.

Staying in contact with DCKickball and attending all required league meetings.

Communicating any changes in regards to scheduling or rules with his/her team.

Ensuring that everyone on his team is eligible to play.

Contacting the other team and the league in the event of a forfeit by 2:00 pm.

Providing the referees as they are scheduled.

Any team that forfeits three or more games will be removed from the remaining schedule and not be allowed to participate in any playoff situations. No refunds will be given and a team dropped by the league may, at DCKickball’s discretion, not be allowed to rejoin the next season.

DCKickball will provide team t-shirts to all teams. Players must wear their official t-shirt during all games. Teams are encouraged to be creative with names and t-shirts, without removing or obscuring the DCKickball logo or the logo of the sponsor bar.

REGULATION GAME

A regulation game shall consist of 5 innings. If a team is more than 15 minutes late, then they must forfeit. The away team will get first at kick. Home team shall be determined by the schedule (or a coin flip).

The game will be called in the event of uncooperative weather. The rules for game cancellation are defined by the parks in which we play. DCKickball will attempt to reschedule any canceled games. If a game is called due to weather and less then 3 complete innings have been played, the game is canceled and will be rescheduled (and replayed starting at 0-0, top of the 1st). If more than 3 full innings have been played, the final score will be the score at the end of the last complete full inning.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Players should have no intentional or unwelcome physical contact with opposing players. Doing so will be considered unsportsmanlike conduct and it will be at the discretion of the referee to issue warnings or eject offending players. A player must make the referee aware if he or she feels any contact was unwarranted.

Trash talking is permitted as long as it is not cruel, racially motivated, hateful, or a personal attack on another player. The trash talking should only be good natured and shall not be allowed to get out of hand. Threats of physical violence are in no way allowed. The team captain shall ensure that their players behave themselves.

Due to DC city regulations, consumption of alcohol on the fields is strictly prohibited. If a person is seen consuming alcohol on the field, that person’s team immediately forfeits that day’s game and may, at the discretion of DCKickball, be removed from the league.

PITCHING/CATCHING

The pitcher must plant their foot on the pitching strip as they wind-up to pitch. No running up to the strip to launch a pitch. Pitches must be underhanded. The ball must cross the plate within a foot on either side. The ball may not be more than 1 foot off the ground as it crosses the plate (bouncy).

The pitcher must stay behind the pitching strip until the ball is kicked. Failure to do so results in a ball. All infielders must stay behind the imaginary line stretching from first to third base until the ball is kicked. Failure to do so results in a ball.

The catcher must field behind home plate before the ball is kicked. The catcher shall not interfere with the kicker in any way. Failure to abide by this rule results in a ball.

KICKING

All kicks must be made by the foot (Duh!). Any lower leg contact while attempting to kick the ball will be considered a kick regardless of where it strikes the leg or foot.

All kicks must occur at or behind home plate. Both feet must be on or behind home plate at the time the ball is kicked. If one or more feet are in front of home plate at the time the ball is kicked, it is a strike and the kick is called back (if such a kick is caught on the fly, it is an out).

Bunting is allowed. A bunt is defined as a kick that does not travel further than first or third base. A bunt must remain within bounds until it crosses past first or third base. Men who bunt may be mocked. Mercilessly.

Any fair kicked ball that travels outside of a reasonable area of play will result in a ground rule double. This doesn’t pertain to the unlikely event of a home run kick; rather it pertains to fair balls that then bounce over a fence.

RUNNING

Runners must stay within the base line. Fielders must stay out of the base line unless they are attempting to tag a runner out or catch the ball. Fielders trying to make an out on base may have their foot on base, but must lean out of the base line. Runners unfairly hindered by any fielder within the base line shall be safe at the base to which they were running.

Neither leading off base, nor stealing a base is allowed. A runner may only move off his/her base after the ball has been kicked. And you can’t pass the runner in front of you. Nor can you pick up the runner in front of you and carry them. (Although that would be kinda cool). These are outs.

Hitting a runner with the ball above shoulder level is not allowed. Any runner hit above the shoulders is safe and advances one base. Exceptions:
If the runner intentionally uses his head to block the ball. The runner is out. If the runner is ducking, diving or sliding (i.e. attempts to dodge the ball) and is hit in the head because of this, he/she is out.

If a kicked ball is caught on the fly, runners must tag their originating base (on or after the moment the ball is first touched by a fielder) before running to the next base.

Only one base on an overthrow is allowed to the runner. The one base is not automatic and the runner must take the risk of being made out. The one base is only available before the play ends.

STRIKES

The strike zone is one (1) foot on either side of the plate and is one foot high. As long as any part of the ball passes through the strike zone, the ball is a strike. A kick occurring in front of home plate is also a strike (if such a kick is caught on the fly, it is an out).

BALLS

A ball is:

a pitch outside the strike zone

the catcher interfering with the kicker or being in front of home base before the ball is kicked

any player crossing the “line” that runs from first to third and cross the pitching mound

four (4) balls will get you to first base

FOULS

A foul is:

a kick landing out of bounds. The foul is determined by where the ball lands not how it travels to get there. Remember that if such a kick is caught on the fly it is an out

a kick landing inbounds, but traveling out of bounds on its own before reaching first or third base. (Any ball touched by an in-bounds fielder is automatically in play)

a ball that is tipped while being kicked but continues to travel behind the kicker; ; but if such a kick is caught on the fly it is an out

a kicker touching (or kicking) the ball twice while on or behind home plate (i.e., in foul territory); but if such a kick is caught on the fly it is an out

Any foul that hits a tree or other outside object is a dead ball and not illegible to be caught for an out. The ball remains a foul.

Three fouls is an out

OUTS

An out is:

a count of three strikes

a count of three fouls

a runner touched by the ball at anytime while not on base (unless a head shot)

any kicked ball (fair or foul) that is caught before it hits the ground

a ball tag on a base to which a runner is forced to run

kicking out of order

a runner leading off the base or stealing

a count of three outs completes the team’s half of the inning

BALL IN PLAY

Once the pitcher has the ball in control and is within 10 feet of the pitching strip, the play ends

Party Planning

Planning and attending parties is one of the highlights of being a DCKickball Board member. You have a great deal of leeway in terms of where and when your events will take place. Of course, with such power comes great responsibility. You are a steward of your division’s social budget, and a poorly-planned event can blow-up your budget and your plans for the remainder of the season. This document is meant to be a guide for planning parties, but you should always feel free to color outside the lines if your division wants to do things a bit differently.

Part 1: The Planning

Pretend your division has 400 players. This leads to a social budget of $8000. A popular way to budget your money:

Pre-season Party ($1000)

Mid-season Party ($2500)

Post-season Party ($3500)

Misc ($1000)

The Misc category can cover all kinds of things, from Board meetings to victory pitchers at the happy hours to completely new events.

Here are some of the bars that DCKickball has worked with in the past:

Tom Tom (Adams Morgan)

Grand Central (Adams Morgan)

18th and Red (Adams Morgan)

Nolan’s (Adams Morgan)

McFadden’s (Foggy Bottom)

Penn Quarter Sports Tavern (Chinatown)

RFD (Chinatown)

RnR (Chinatown)

Rhino Bar (Georgetown)

Part 2: The Negotiation

This might seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t need to be! Before you start calling around, decide what you want. Do you want an open bar? Do you want to just buy some kegs? What needs to be included in the open bar? Once you’ve settled on what you’re looking for, you can start calling venues to talk about prices. They do this all the time, so just be clear about what you want (domestic drafts + rail liquor on a Friday night from 9pm-midnight) and how many people are expected to come (usually about 50% the size of your division).

Usually, things will boil down to a per-person cost. A bar might quote you $15 or $20 per person for an open bar “package” that includes a limited set of beers and liquors during a limited time window (say, 3 hours). Your social budget would then assist in subsidizing the cover for your players, so instead of paying $20 at the door, they pay $10. You would then owe the bar $10 for every player who showed-up. This is known as variable pricing.

An alternate way to plan is to simply arrange a flat fee to the bar (see example 3). Say you expect 200-250 people to show-up, you might simply offer the bar $2250 up front for the event ($10×225 people), regardless of how many people show-up. It transfer the “risk” to the venue, since they do better if fewer people come, but do worse if more people come. Bars will only do this if they are convinced that you are providing a good faith estimate on turn-out.

Below are some example contracts that we’ve used in the past. Please take these numbers with a grain of salt, since prices tend to go up over time. Most venues will provide their own contracts with boilerplate terms that are then changed and negotiated between you and the venue. It is always a good idea to get everything in writing, both for your benefit and the venue’s benefit, so that there is no confusion after the fact.

Example 1 (variable cost):

Date: June 2006

Number of people expected: 200

Exclusive use of entire bar

Open bar from 10pm-1am (cash bar after 1am)

Included in open bar: domestic beers, house wine, rail liquor

Cost: $10 for kickballers, $20 for guests (venue keeps the door)

Down payment: $2000 one week prior to event

Example 2 (variable cost):

Date: October 2006

Number of people: 200+

Joint use of entire bar

Open bar from 8:30pm – 12:30am

Included in open bar: domestic beers, and rail liquor

Cost: $10 for kickballers, $20 for guests (venue keeps door)

$250 flat fee for DJ

Down payment of $1000 due

Example 3 (flat cost):

Date: August 2006

Number of people expected: 200-250

Exclusive use of entire bar and patio

Open bar from 9:30pm-1am

Open bar includes: domestic drafts, domestic bottles, house wine, rail and call liquors

Cost: $5 for kickballers, $20 for guests

Flat fee of $4000

Part 3: The Payment

If a check is needed in advance of the event, you must inform DCKickball well in advance so that we can render payment. Please do not leave this until the day of the event. Please provide copies of any contracts or agreements that have been signed. If payment is to be made following the event, please make sure both the Board and the venue “sign-off” on the final counts and amount owed. DCKickball can then either mail a check to the venue, or optionally, complete the transaction over the phone with a CC.

Ok, hope that helps!

7) What now?*

Ok, that’s it for now. The composition of the Board and the fun stuff you do during the season is really whatever you make of it, I just write checks and provide a framework and some connections. Here are some things that probably should be discussed no later than the start of games:

The Mid-Season Party (WHEN, where and how much?)

Playoffs (which Saturday works best? What time?)

The End-of-Season Party (can’t hurt to think about it)

Here is more detailed information on party planning

Spring Kickball is Here!

Registration for the 2008 Spring/Summer season of DCKickball is CLOSED. Games will be played from May to July.

<ins>Divisions</ins>

Columbia (Wed evenings on the Mall) – Closed

Adams Morgan (Tues/Wed evenings around U Street) – Closed

Constitution (Sunday afternoons on the Mall) – Closed

Capital (Wed/Thurs evenings on the Mall) – Closed

District (Tues/Thurs evenings on the Mall) – Closed

CLICK TO REGISTER

Here are answers to some common questions:

What’s the deal with permits and fields?

Generally, fields in DC are permitted by either DPR (think Adams Morgan) or the National Park Service (the Mall). We submit our applications, just like all other leagues, and sit back and wait for the gears to turn. In the best case, we are notified by late February about our fields, but sometimes it can stretch into April for the fields on the Mall. We do our best to locate fields where people expect them to be when registering, but it’s hard to make guarantees. If the location of play or the night of the week changes as a result of how the permit applications worked out, full refunds are always honored.

How does the referral rewards system work?

If you are a veteran of DCKickball, your can earn $5 for every new player (someone who has never played DCK) you bring on board this season. Just log-in to your account to find out your unique referral code. Then (and this is crucial!) make sure the new player enters this code when registering.

Referral rewards are paid via PayPal after the season has started. Rewards can only be redeemed for registered and PAID players. Your registration fee must be paid in full before the rewards will be sent out.

For other questions check out our FAQ

WHERE: Washington, DC

WHAT: Kickball Tournament and Party

WHEN: Saturday, July 28th 2007

WHY: To play kickball, drink, and be merry!

Rough Timeline of Events:

Friday

We will be playing flip-cup at The Exchange Saloon (map) from 9pm-11pm. Feel free to get there early for dinner and grab a few drinks before the flipping begins. DCKickball will be buying the first keg, the rest is up to you guys. We will be keeping track of wins/losses for use in the Tournament the next day (seeding, tie breakers, etc). Bone up on our flip-cup rules when you get a chance.

Saturday (Day)

The Open will be played on the Washington Monument grounds (between 15th and 17th St NW). Please plan on being on the Mall by 10am. Please give yourself plenty of time to Metro or find parking. Games will begin promptly at 11am.

The Open will feature 4 pools of teams, playing 3 games of round-robin. So, you are guaranteed to play at least 3 games on Saturday. The winner of each pool will advance to a single-elimination Final Four tournament to crown the Open Champion. Here’s a rough schedule:

10am: register/set-up

11am: pool play 1

12am: pool play 2

1pm: lunch break

2pm: pool play 3

3pm: semi-finals

4pm: finals

Saturday (Night)

All Open players will be provided with bracelets for the DCKickball Block Party, being held in Adams Morgan. There will be three bars hosting End-of-Season parties for DCKickball’s teams that night:

Tom Tom (map)

Grand Central (map)

18th and Red (map)

Your bracelet gets you kickball drink specials at all 3 of these bars from 9pm-midnight. Used to paying $6 for a gin and tonic on a Saturday night? Forget about that noise, get there early, drink cheap, and party with hundreds of other kickballers!

Sunday

Finally, we will be holding a Farewell Brunch at The Front Page (map) at 11am. We will have tables set-up for us and brunch will run from 11am-1pm. We are being hooked-up with the unlimited brunch menu (which includes Mimosas) for $21 (this is about a 7 to 8 dollar discount from the regular price). They will also have $2.50 drafts and $4.50 Bloody Mary’s!

Confirmed Participants

Please make sure every player on your roster skims the rules. We’ll shoot-out email updates leading up to the tourney to help point-out specific rules, major differences, etc.

All proceeds from this Tournament will go towards costs with the remainder going to fund the DCKickball Legal Defense Fund. Click on the banner below to learn more.

Hotel Details

Ok, I’ve reserved a block of rooms (King + fold-out couch) at the Arlington Rosslyn Courtyard by Marriott. Here’s the information:

1533 Clarendon Blvd
Arlington, VA 22209
(703) 528-2222

The room rate is $89/night. The group name is “DCKickball”. Room must be booked by Saturday, July 7th. Space is limited, so I encourage all teams who need to book to do so as soon as possible.

The location is perfect, just a few Metro stops from the fields, and less than a 10 minute drive. Here are just a few amenities that are probably too good for grubby kickballers: pool, free high speed internet and in-room refrigerators.

PLEASE CALL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS BOOKING A ROOM! (202) 285-6865

Can’t Make It To DC?

No worries! After all, didn’t you know July 28th is <ins>National Independent Kickball Day</ins>? The Little Rock Kickball Association is throwing a Rockin’ Kickball Carnival that entire weekend, and its welcoming players and teams from all leagues to come down to Arkansas for some good ol’ fashion fun!

Sharing

Sharing photos and videos with your teammates and the rest of DCKickball couldn’t be easier. To share, create a free Flickr account. Once you’ve signed-up, go ahead and upload your photos and/or videos. Any items you tag with dckickball will be shared on the website. You should also tag the photos you upload to indicate what division you’re in (ex: dckickball-adamsmorgan, etc).

If you’re sharing a bunch of photos, please make sure they are organized into a set, otherwise they won’t show-up on the left pane of the website. Videos don’t need to be in sets, just make sure they’re tagged!

1. How is DCKickball organized?

DCKickball is a league. The league is split into multiple divisions, which play their games at a particular field and on certain day(s) of the week. Each division is then made up of 8-16 teams and is run by a Board, which is comprised of players from that division.

2. Whoa, what’s this Board thing?

The Board is comprised of players in the division. The Board is responsible for both handling some of the day-to-day operations of the Division (such as scheduling games) and deciding how to spend the Division’s social budget. Typically a Board will consist of a President, Vice-President, Social Coordinator, Equipment/Referee Coordinator, and Communications. The Board in essence represents the players of that division, and is the driving force behind most of the social functions. If you’d like to be on the Board of your Division, simply contact us and let us know how you’d like to help.

3. How does the social budget work?

For every player that signs-up for a Division, a significant portion of the registration fee (around $20) goes directly towards that Division’s social budget. So, for a Division of 400 people, that’s $8000. This budget is spent by the Board to subsidize everything from flip-cup tournaments to the various parties that are thrown.

4. Who’s the sponsor bar going to be?

Each Division is hosted by a different bar, which can vary season-to-season. Please check the Division’s webpage for more up-to-date information.

5. Is this a serious league?

God, I hope not. Maybe about drinking. The focus of DCKickball, from the beginning, is about meeting people, having fun, and not taking things too seriously. But it’s pretty much up to everyone involved to contribute to this attitude. If you encounter anyone who isn’t into this, please tell them to chill-out. It’s just kickball, people.

6. How often do we play? What about rainouts?

Teams play once a week (not counting holidays). Once the teams are all registered, each Division will create a schedule that will be published on their website. In the event of rainouts, an attempt will be made to re-schedule.

7. Why should I play in this league?

DCKickball is all about providing the most value that it can to players, particularly the players who volunteer to run their divisions. We will always strive to provide the best experience possible. $20 of your registration fee goes directly towards funding your Divison’s budget, which is primarily used to throw parties and organize charitable fundraisers.

8. Where will the parties be? Who will be organizing them?

At a <u>minimum</u> there will be a pre-season, mid-season, and post-season party. These parties will be organized by the Board of each Division, which will be made up of players in the league who choose to volunteer. The parties are funded by the Division’s social budget.

9. What are the choices for t-shirt colors?
